Week 8: March
March is a black and white comic about the Civil Rights Movement, in a perspective of civil rights leader, U.S. Congressman John Lewis. Because of time setting, the novel mostly talks about civil rights of black people.
Stereotype's alway's been a sensitive subject to talk about in any kind of media, because it’s not the positive subject all the time—gender, culture, race, all sorts of stuff. Thanks to developed citizenship, stereotypical issues has decreased compared to back in past, but I feel like we’re still far away from well developed citizenship. Lots of media such as cartoon, comics, movies, television and other are still using stereotype to show the character especially when they’re from different culture. I understand stereotypical image would be the one that allows the viewer to understand because it’s “stereotype”, but sometimes it could be offensive and disturbing since I’m also the one who feels the same way. Personal stuff, but two stereotype I’ve went through the most is asked if I’m Chinese, and if I’m from North Korea. Some could be asking from pure curiosity or complete ignorance, but sometimes I feel these are rude and offensive question to be asked of. I think people have stereotype because of limited or lack of information they take from media. Because media likes to show sensitive information to drag viewer’s attention, it’s hard for them to know the whole thing about certain culture and stuff. Media’s filtered information is one reason why people have stereotype, but I sometimes wish people put more attention to different culture and minorities because it is never wrong to learn.
