Week 4: Comic Books (Batman)

The comic I read is Batman series, and it is always to see an old comic that's still being published. The drawing itself is very different from Batman nowadays; drawing is more simple, flat toned, less background, and different feeling of story telling. Because first issue of every comics wants to introduce the character to the audience, the story flows pretty fast and direct. I think the old issue's way of story telling is very cheesy, and it is pretty direct like story driven plot instead of character lead story. I understand the character’s motivation to become a batman, but things that happens after that feels like it’s just happening instead of showing clear motivation of a character. I usually like to empathize with a character, so I would have liked it more if I see more details of a character’s emotion and reason to their action. I love to see the story of villains and Batman conflict, examine each one of their ability.
Also, I found I feel like there's difference between narration nowadays and back in past. The way narration is read feels before seems similar with the early Superman issue; something like “it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s superman”. It’s not bad as an old comic because that’s how old comics are suppose to feel like. However, I think narration box is used less compared to past. The first issue puts narration box in every few shots to explain everything but the recent ones show less narration box, only to explain that changes the setting or story dramatically. I feel like this is because the author gives more choice to the audience how to interpret the story, character's setting, and their emotion.
The drawing style and design, personally prefers the recent issues, but it’s also interesting to see the development of old comics. It seems like old issues tried to make stuff clear by minimizing the detail and the color (also printing issues), but thinking of how old comics were sold back in past, I get the style of it.
I always love Batman comics and it’s amazing how this comic’s been published for decades, made into film, and how the world inside have developed.
