Week 3: the Comic Strip
Lots of early comics were presented as part of newspaper, with a small long strip. They were simple, or sometimes illustrative, and uses small jokes and silliness. These comic strip involves Micky Mouse, Little Nemo in Slumberland, The Kat, etc. But because they were early age comics, not all of them are best humors to read.
Mickey Mouse has simple black and white illustration. It's mostly showing humor of stupidity. However, lots of their early comics involved lots of racist, stereotypical jokes that are inappropriate these days. Some of them are quite fun to read maybe because the character is so famous so myself focus more onto it.
Little Nemo in Slumberland is colored comic strip. It has very fancy colors and drawings. Unlike other flat comic strips, it has perspective and lots of simplified yet detailed background. This comic has style of still image of an early animation. Personally, I enjoyed looking the drawings instead of reading the actual comic.
The Kat Walked in Beauty is a daily comic strip. It is simplified as much as Mickey Mouse, using only black and white. So instead of putting effort in a background like Little Nemo in Slumberland, it focused more on the character's gag. What I enjoyed with this comic is that it uses pronunciation gag; such as wonder to "wunda", curiosity to "kuriosity".
I think point of reading a comic strip is its simplicity, so style like Mickey Mouse or The Kat was more catchy for me. Small humors do not require time to read it heavily, and it's also fun to read it as series.
