Week 2: Understanding Comics; The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud is a comic book that helps understand comic and how it works. He uses comics as visual references and examples for the viewer to understand easier.
One of the part that was really interesting to me is about us; being self-centered race. Giving the visual examples us reflecting human face to an object, such as a front of a car, a lid of sugar bottle, it shows we're always making an illusion of ourselves through all kind of objects. This is connected to human's emotion as well, leading to a cartoon world. Everything in cartoon is so much reduced and simple compared to real life, then you put yourself into the character. The cartoon is like a "vacuum" that pulls the viewer's identity and awareness. But because you feel yourself as a character in a cartoon, it allows you to catch the message fully. Not only through a cartoon, you also relate yourself with an object in real life-- such as when you're driving a car or a clothes you're wearing. Although they are different object, you start to connect objects to yourself.
